QUIZ

Health Literacy Check-Up
quiz created using Qualtrics, an online survey software. The quiz assumes a narrative format, with students assisting 12-year-old Jasmine in going online to learn about her new diagnosis. The quiz primarily assesses information literacy  with some formative assessment of overall health literacy. It employs a variety of question formats, including open-ended (short answer, provide an example) and close-ended  (multiple choice, multiple answer, confidence rating). Upon completion, students see their score and right answers for all gradable close-ended questions.

DISCUSSION FORUM

Townhall
A traditional online discussion board created using the Wix Forum app. Discussion promotes active learning and capitalizes on the number one reason people of all ages play games: socialization. The first post offers suggestions for use to the instructor and introduces interactive features to students. A total of five different questions collectively build information literacy, interactive health literacy, and critical health literacy. The emphasis on discussion recalled my previous experience with brave spaces and, as a result, design of the entire embraced the brave superhero theme. Brave spaces as opposed to safe spaces recognizes that risk and discomfort are important aspects of learning especially in social justice pedagogy.

SERIOUS GAMING

Health Literacy Booster Shot
A Windows and Mac compatible serious game of the visual novel genre created using TyranoBuilder Visual Novel Studio software on Steam, a video game digital distribution platform for computers. The game builds both functional health literacy, by identifying some diabetes-specific terminology, and communicative health literacy through a simulated conversation between child patient and doctor. It also assesses health numeracy through use of TyranoBuilder's scripting language, which reports the number of tries a student took for each specific question.
